Dr Philip Gan is the Director of General Surgery at Southwest Healthcare Warrnambool in Victoria, Australia, where he has been based for 18 years.
His particular interest is in minimally invasive surgery, incorporating reduced port, single port, mini-laparoscopy, percutaneous and hybrid trans-vaginal NOTES across a broad range of surgical procedures. These include bariatrics, fundoplication, splenectomy, cholecystectomy, colorectal and hernia surgery. These techniques complement an enhanced recovery approach with very short lengths of stay and minimal to no narcotic analgesia requirements. He is also actively engaged in medical device innovation, and is the inventor of the LiVac™ Retractor and LiVac Sling™, both registered medical devices targeting the MIS field, and patented in multiple territories. He was Principal Investigator in the First in Human LiVac Trial in 2013 which was supported by a $250K Federal Government Grant. The LiVac™ Retractor is in clinical use in Australia, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Korea.
Philip's bariatric interests extend back over his 18 year membership of OSSANZ / ANZMOSS, transitioning from laparoscopic gastric banding to his mainstay of the Mini Gastric Bypass procedure over recent years. He is a founding member of the OAGB-MGB club.
Philip has published and presented internationally through the United States, Europe and Asia on MIS techniques and the LiVac™ devices. He has been an invited guest speaker to industry, and is a guest lecturer for the University of Adelaide Masters of Minimally Invasive Surgery degree.
